Fun new fitness trends to get you moving this spring

Looking for some unconventional date ideas to spice up your next catch-up? Accredited exercise physiologist, Kitty Chao, explores the latest friendly fitness trends to shake up your afternoon coffee date with some low-key outdoor activity instead.

One of Australia's most redeeming qualities is its ability to give good afternoon sun. To help you out as summer comes rolling around, we've got a couple of fun (and sometimes sweaty) suggestions for the afternoon activities you can enjoy with your friends. Jump onto these latest fitness trends!

1. Get friendly at F45

Got a spare 45 minutes in hand? Why not jump into an F45 class with a buddy and see what the hype is all about? F45 training combines elements of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Circuit Training, and Functional Training. If you’re like many of us and short on time, HIIT training can be a great option - particularly if you're looking to improve your cardiovascular fitness.  

 

2. Downward dog to Snoop Dogg at a hip hop yoga class

Yoga is truly for everybody! Why not hit up your local yoga studio and see if they have hip hop yoga? Hip Hop Yoga is fun way to get active and try something different and is a great excuse to bust a groove while you to work on your flexibility.

3. Find your inner ninja warrior

Do you think you’re the next ninja warrior? Why not grab some mates and find out! Facilities like Skyzone have class details located in Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra.  Ninja courses challenge not only your mind, but your whole body conditioning and upper body strength too. So if you're confident you can knock out a few pullups here and there why not get your inner ninja on this weekend?

4. Hit the tree tops with high roping

Are you a daredevil? Why not climb trees and fly through the forest on a zip line suspended 20metres from the ground? Companies like Tree Tops offer courses for all ages and skill levels! Plus, this adventure will not only test your fear of heights but also give you a full body workout, from flying foxes to jumping over logs.

 

5. Satisfy your GoT urges with archery tag

If you're a Game of Thrones fan I'm sure you've entertained the fantasy of unleashing your inner Jon Snow (No? Just me?). Well if you've ever thought of firing an arrow, now you can! All you need to do is grab a couple of mates, form a team and play a local competition of archery tag! (Yes, it's a thing!)

Not only will running after your mates improve your cardiorespiratory fitness, team sports have also been proved to increase adherence to exercise.

 

6. Anti gravity dodge ball

Played dodge ball before? Well its time to spice up the game and say hello to your friend 'anti gravity'! Studies have also shown that if you’re playing a sport you thoroughly enjoy (and let's be honest, who doesn't enjoy bouncing around while dodging rogue ball assaults?) it can increase adherence to exercise, so grab a couple of mates and see what you can do!
