Pregnant and wondering… is it safe to take probiotics during pregnancy? When you’re pregnant you worry about a lot of things (I know first-hand being 21 weeks pregnant myself!) but rest assured knowing that probiotic safety doesn’t need to be one of them. This is because probiotics remain in the digestive tract and do not enter your bloodstream which means that they will not reach your developing baby.
I’m sure that many of you have heard about probiotics before but for those who haven’t, probiotics are basically naturally occurring microorganisms like bacteria and yeast that live in your gut. They are considered ‘good bacteria’ because they help fight the ‘bad bacteria’ that can live in your gut too.
Probiotics have quite a lot of benefits in general and during pregnancy even more so as they can help ease some of the not so flash symptoms that we get whilst pregnant. One of them being constipation. Consuming probiotics has been shown to help soften stools and increase bowel movement. And vice versa if you are suffering from diarrhoea as they help slow the passage of food through the digestive tract.
Probiotics, in general, improve digestion. When taking the right kind of probiotics you improve your gut health which in turn improves nutrient absorption for not only yourself but your baby too. Another reason that probiotics are beneficial during pregnancy is because they help improve your already low immune system and help strengthen bubs immune system too which makes them less susceptible to illnesses once they are welcomed into this beautiful world. I’ve always been a big probiotic advocate and now that I am pregnant even more so. Ensuring my baby receives as many vital nutrients as possible is so important to me and to many pregnant women I’m sure. These are only a fraction of the benefits you will receive from probiotics during pregnancy but there are many more.
